Social Networking in Schools

When it comes to social networking, many kids and teenagers are addicted to them. All one has to do to use a social network is register for free. They can then log on whenever they want to participate in discussions with friends, find out what friends are up to and let friends know what they are up to. Social networking has taken over live social activities for the most part with how advanced technology is today.

Students now have access to social networking websites at school. This is a good thing and a bad thing. The good part about having access to social networks in schools is that it can teach students social activities. However, the bad part is that it can quickly get in the way of school work and study. Not only this, but students tend to post personal information on these sites and this can lure online predators to them.

What Schools Should Do About This

It is not appropriate for students to have access to these websites. When the Internet was brought into schools, pornography websites were blocked so students could not have access to them. Schools should do the same thing when it comes to social networking sites. They should at least limit the students time on these sites so it does not interfere with school work and studying.

What Schools Can Do

There are a few things schools can do to keep social networking sites from interfering with school work and studying. They include the following:

  • Block access to social networking sites or at least limit it. This means either very little or no Internet recess for social networking activity. Students should only focus on educational websites while using the Internet in school.
  • Educate students on safe Internet use during and even after school.
  • Monitoring students while they use the Internet at school.
  • Consequences for violating the terms when it comes to social network activity during school if it is even going to be allowed.

Every personnel of the school should be well-informed about these websites and how they can affect the learning and school work of the students. This means the principal, all teachers, and even counselors.

Social networking can be a lot of fun and can even help students become more social. However, they need to be taught to use these sites responsibly while in school and even at home. Parents also need to monitor the social networking activities of their children.

Best Social Networks for Students

Twitter is the most popular social network for students and anyone else really. Students can use hashtags to find educational material such as #edchat or #edtech. Another great thing about Twitter is there will soon be better parental controls which means this is a great option for educators to allow their students to use Twitter for learning.

Everyone knows about Facebook and how widely popular it is for everyone nowadays. Not only can students interact with teachers on this social network while at home working on homework but they can find educational Facebook pages and keep informed about them.

This is one great social network that can bring students, teachers, and parents together. They can share documents as well as create groups. It also offers higher levels of education for those looking for a tutor or help with studying.

There are many more social network sites students, parents and teachers can use to collaborate. These are just a few of the many great educational ones online today.
