Taking an online course allows you to almost completely personalize your education. You don’t have to sit in a room with four hundred other people. You’re not scheduled into a weekly time slot. You’re not forced to drive to campus or walk through the rain to get to your professor’s office. Of course, online courses do still follow a schedule, but the ways that you can manipulate that schedule to directly benefit yourself are many. Here are a few things to consider when you take an online course and want to take advantage of its flexibility in your schedule.
What Time of Day Are You At Your Mental Best?
Many people learn best at different times of the day. They have moments when their brains are most active and prepared to process new information and concepts, and then they have moments when they feel more relaxed or less able to focus. Think about how your brain works. Are you peppy and talkative when you first wake up? Or does it take you some time to feel one hundred percent? Do you get groggy towards the evening? How you answer these questions will determine when you should try to focus on your studies, as the better your ability to handle information, the greater your success will be in your online course.
What Time of Day Are You Free?
Of course, in a perfect world, you would be able to take the online course at your leisure; however, you probably have plenty of other responsibilities to occupy your time. In that case, you should try to find a compromise in your schedule. For example, if you feel like you are at your peak in the morning, then perhaps you can find a way to show up later at work. Or maybe you can go to sleep earlier so you can wake up and do your course before work.
How Do You Learn Best?
Finally, think of how you learn best. Do you learn from reading along? Or do you feel more comfortable writing out all of your notes? Or maybe you get the most out of your classes by listening to course content? If you know that you have a unique method of learning, then find a way to incorporate that into your schedule. For example, if you do really well by listening to lectures, download them onto a music player and listen to them as you exercise. Or burn them onto a music CD and listen to the lectures in the car. These are great ways to take advantage of the flexibility you have in your schedule.
Really, though, the most important thing to keep in mind when you schedule your online courses and your study sessions is that balance is key. If you can find a way to balance your daily schedule and your study routine with the goals you have in life, then you should do well in your online courses.
