Theoretically, these books can be the student’s material to keep throughout the life of the device. Tests can be taken without the need of time-consuming scanning device as teachers make sure that everyone has a number two pencil. Digital exams and quizzes can be passed out daily. The list goes on.
As Android is an open operating system; anyone with programming knowledge can build an app. Even the most novice of developers can learn how to create a small whack-a-mole game in a half hour using MIT’s App Inventor. It would cost less to have the school district hire a private developer to design an app for a particular class than it would be to purchase materials of the same without the technological wrapping. If your district heads were respectable in the community, they could make a deal with colleges to have students develop apps for elementary and high school curriculum for next to nothing while providing the college student credits towards graduation.
Anything is available for educational materials through the use of tablets. What Google Play may not have Amazon or Barnes and Noble will. These eBooks are far cheaper than hardbound classroom books and can be obtained in a matter of minutes, if not less. Entire encyclopedias created by respectable companies are available for mobile devices. It’s not like these are developed in some kid’s basement full of half-truths and conspiracies such as other online media sites.

Whether you are using an Android or iOS device, there is almost an app for anything you can think of. Math helper apps that generate random quizzes can keep students practicing. Space apps delve deep into how GPS location works in regards to planets and stars when aiming your tablet at the sky. It is an ever-growing market of free and purchased apps that are insanely cheap when you figure the cost of materials that go into any given classroom.
Without a plan of usage, any tool will sit in a room and collect dust. Educators, and ruling bodies of such, need to have a plan for usage otherwise they can and will be abused. With the available apps, eBooks, and more that are available for tablets, it shouldn’t take much effort to incorporate them in everyday use. The fault isn’t with the technology, but with those who attempt to utilize it without having a course of action.
