6th Pan-Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning: Access and Success in Learning

The Sixth Pan Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning (PCF6) will take place from 24-28 November 2010 at Le-Meridien, Cochin Resort & Convention Centre (Kochi, Kerala), India. The theme of PCF6 is: Access and Success in Learning: Global Development Perspectives.

PCF6 is an international conference that will explore the contribution of open and distance learning to international development goals by opening up access to learning at every level. The Forum brings together practitioners, researchers, planners and policy makers in the fields of open and distance learning and development from over 70 countries. It provides opportunities to share experience and expertise and to contribute to future policy and provision. Participants will represent the main Commonwealth, Asia and international institutions and agencies active in the field, including funding bodies and technology providers.

2010 Global Education Conference

The 2010 Global Education Conference will be held November 15-19, 2010, online and free. Sessions will be held in multiple time zones and multiple languages over the five days. Global Education Conference is now accepting proposals for presentations.

The conference is a collaborative and world-wide community effort to significantly increase opportunities for globally-connecting education activities and initiatives. All sessions will be held in the Elluminate platform, will be broadcast live, and will be available in recorded formats afterwards.

There is no formal registration required for the conference, as all the sessions will be open and public. 2010 Global Education Conference strands are set to include:

Teachers – professional development, training, etc.
Students – student-led initiatives, exchange programs, service learning, etc.
Pedagogy – curriculum, digital citizenship, assessment, etc.
Policy and Leadership – exemplary schools, ICT infrastructure, government initiatives, etc.

Experiential Learning in Virtual Worlds Conference

1st Global Conference Experiential Learning in Virtual Worlds (Call for Papers), 20th–22nd March 2011, Prague, Czech Republic. The aim of this conference will be to examine formal and informal learning in virtual worlds in an attempt to critique both its essential characteristics and its future possibilities. Teachers of all levels, university faculty, virtual world players, researchers, and others interested in what happens in virtual worlds and what it means for us as humans are invited to participate.

My View on EduLearn 2010

Last week I was in Barcelona participating on EduLearn 2010. The main objective of this conference is to promote and disseminate the experiences in new educational technologies and e-learning applied to Education in all fields and disciplines.

EduLearn 2010 was a gigantic conference with six parallel sessions. The conference main topics included some interesting issues like:

e-Learning (Blended Learning, Mobile Learning , Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs), Managed Learning Environments (MLEs), Learning Management Systems (LMS), Online/Virtual Laboratories, eLearning Standards (SCORM), Online Assessment)
Computer Supported Collaborative Work (Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs), Web 2.0 and Social Networking: Blogs, Wikis, etc, Web 3D Applications and Virtual Reality)
Emerging Technologies in Education (Technology-Enhanced Learning, Web Classroom Applications, Mobile/Wireless Technologies)
Educational Software & Serious Games (Computer Software on Education, Educational/Serious Games, Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia, Animation and 3D Systems, Videos for Learning)
E-content Management and Development (Knowledge Management, Digital Libraries and Repositories, ePortfolios)

My first note is that EduLearn 2010 was very well organized. Everything went smoothly: registration, documentation, information to the participants, coffee breaks, lunches and conference rooms were close to perfection. Even the six parallel sessions’ schedule was almost fulfilled.

There were very interesting talks and discussions. I was more interested on the Technology in Education issues. Here, the most relevant trends, as far I could see, were virtual learning (Second Life and virtual laboratories), collaborative learning, connectivism, evaluation and online assessment, and lectures recording. Lecture recording was one of the strongest topics (I suppose I must start thinking in recording my lectures).

On the downsides, I expected to hear more about the use of Twitter, and other social networks, in Education (try to search, for instance, “edulearn” on twitter and see the results). Maybe I have missed some important talks on these subjects. One of the things that impressed me more was the large number of presenters that read the slides or their notes instead of making a real presentation. I would prefer a little less focus on technology and a little more on the message delivery style. In fifteen minutes that wouldn’t be difficult, I guess.

In short, EduLearn 2010 was a rich, fruitful and very well organized conference. I am willing to participate in EduLearn 2011. See you there.

EDGE 2010 Conference – E-Learning: The Horizon and Beyond

EDGE 2010 Conference E-Learning: The Horizon and Beyond. The EDGE 2010 conference will bring together researchers, university and college educators, cooperating teachers and teacher mentors, school district and ministry of education professionals, teacher association leaders, and graduate students to share research and innovative practices in the field of new and emerging technologies in education.

The conference program is intended to be broad, encompassing K-12 and post-secondary education and aims to provide a constructive forum for the presentation and discussion of new ideas, research and best practices relating to use of new and emerging technologies in education. Sessions will focus on the application of technologies in teaching, learning, research, and educational leadership. Themes will include such topics as Web 2.0 and 3.0, assistive technologies, fine arts and culture, skills training and trades education, second language, professional development, leadership, and aboriginal education.

EDGE 2010 Conference will take place between October 12-15, 2010 at the Delta Hotel, St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada.

2009 Horizon Report Web Edition. From the Executive Summary: The annual Horizon Report describes the continuing work of the New Media Consortium (NMC)’s Horizon Project, a long-running qualitative research project that seeks to identify and describe emerging technologies likely to have a large impact on teaching, learning, research, or creative expression within learning-focused organizations. The 2009 Horizon Report is the sixth annual report in the series. The report is produced again in 2009 as a collaboration between the New Media Consortium and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI), an EDUCAUSE program.

2nd Pan-American and Francophone ePortfolio Conference: ePortfolio and Digital Identity

ePortfolio and Digital Identity Conference, Montreal, 5-7 May 2008. The 2nd Pan-American and Francophone ePortfolio conference is being organised by EIfEL in partnership with the Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance (CSLP) at Concordia University, the Centre de Recherche en Informatique de Montréal (CRIM) and HR-XML. It will take place at Concordia University on 5-7 May 2008. This year’s special focus will be on ePortfolio and digital identity extending the concept of the ePortfolio and exploring the link between the records and services that contribute to the emergence of a digital identity.

Keynote speakers confirmed to date include Stephen Downes of the National Research Council, Canada, Helen Barrett, International ePortfolio Consultant, Fulup Ar Foll, Sun Microsystems and Serge Ravet, EIfEL.

Tracks will be run in French and English. Presenters and authors are invited to submit an abstract (500 to 750 words) of their contributions by 21st February 2008 on the following themes:
