Fundraising and Distance Education: A “Huge” Question
University fundraisers consider how to pitch to iPod generation, distance learners. ‘Meanwhile, the proliferation of online learning courses and degree options that allow students to take entire course loads for a degree without once setting foot on a university campus presents another interesting question for development directors: How much loyalty will online alumni have to the school if they never had those traditional collegiate experiences of football games and bad cafeteria meals? No one is suggesting that distance education should be discouraged. After all, it enables more individuals to earn degrees, especially those who might otherwise not have the chance to go to college. But Michael Carroll, vice president for institutional advancement at the University of New Mexico and president of the UNM Foundation, says online students do present a new challenge for fundraisers.’
